This is a CT axial image of the orbits of a 19 month old boy. He came to the pediatrics office with extreme swelling and redness around his right eye. He had been on antibiotics for the infection for ten days and it had only gotten worse so the pediatrician ordered the CT. The impression on the report reads as follows:
1. Extensive opacification of right maxillary sinus and ethmoid air cells. I feel this is an extension of this inflammatory process through the lamina papyracea into the medial right orbit with phlegmonous inflammatory changes noted resulting in mass-effect on the medial rectus muscle as well as some slight mass-effect on the optic nerve on the right. These inflammatory changes extend posteriorly to near the orbital apex. There is also some associated periorbital soft tissue swelling on the right superficial to the orbit. Consultation with pediatric ophthamologist is to be obtained.

The child obtained an infection in his eye from a severe sinus infection that spread.
